Are you considering running a marathon soon? 26.2 miles is no joke. You had better have a great training plan, but what should you look for when you want a marathon plan?
First and foremost, you need to avoid injury. Almost every marathon plan out there revs up the mileage too early which can cause injury. Being hurt or sick during training can completely derail your chances on race day. Running too little also can lead to a miserable time for your marathon. Finding a balanced approach was tough.
Next, training for a marathon can be quite mundane. Distance run after distance run after distance run. Sounds boring right. A great marathon plan will build up your strength and stamina with a variety of workouts. Day one of training should be designed to help you with day two, not race day. You need to work your way through a 5k race, a 10k race to help you find your goal pace for the marathon. You don't have to run marathon type workouts right away. Finding a workout plan that was fresh and fun was challenging.
Also, a training plan must be flexible. Not everyone can run six minute miles. Following ridiculous workouts will get you frustrated. A great marathon plan will adapt to your goal finishing time. Finding a plan that fits your abilities and needs was difficult before.
Finally, a training plan must have tips and strategies to help you on your big day. What shoes should you wear? What should you eat the day before, the day of, and during the race? How should you pace your race? Finding a plan that helps you train and on your race day was impossible.
